Re: ALSO...going in for a laparotomy....HELP :(

Looking at the other responses to your message made me think of all those things as well. My laparotomy, BTW, was emergency surgery so I had no time at all to prepare and had no idea how or what or anything.

To echo some of the other statements, the staples are scary I admit. But for me it was the thought that someone actually stapled my most sensitive area...and worse yet, THEY HAD TO COME OUT!!! But they do NOT hurt to remove, it is pretty quick and painless. Also, I had a catheter, so it was nice not have to urinate for almost two full days! :) I was actually scared when they handed me the "happy button" as the nurse called it. I can't take morphine so my button was hooked up to demerol. By the third day they took that away and gave percocet as needed and some ambien for sleep. I don't normally say this, but take the meds...they help alot. Also, don't try to move right after surgery because you may be shocked to find you can't really move your legs but this is only temporary. Doing laps around the hospital floor will help even if it seems difficult at first. As far as meds causing constipation, my doc prescribed some very mild laxative and that helped. The last thing you want to do is strain to go to the bathroom.

The pillow is good advice, wish I had thought of that! Will keep in mind if, God forbid, I have another one of these events. Passing time is hard, reading or DVD's...for me it was plenty of laptop solitaire.

And it is true, your skin near the incision will be oddly numb...it took a while for this feeling to go away for me at least. And you won't get your period the next month, if it happens it is normal so my doc said.

Sorry for the overload but I think the more info you have, the better you can do what is right for you in order to prepare. And you are so lucky to have all of this advice from others because that helps you really know, from those who have been there (and not the doc).

And do let us know how you are doing! And feel free to email me too offline if you need moral support or a good laugh...

:)
