Re: 'mysterious infections'

I just thought id reply to your message as you seemed o have similar issues as I have dealt with.

Since the age of 13 (starting my periods) I have suffered. During every period I would get severe pain that would cause me not to go to work or school and would result in vomiting. Several trips to the GP and trying numerous amounts of medication was unsuccessful! The last resort was to put me on the contraceptive pill at 13/14 and said I was just one of the lucky ones. there was no mention that there could be other 'problems' going on!

Anyway, 'the pill' did see to work in term of preventing the pain from getting out of control and stopped me from vomiting. However, this did not mean that I was completely pain free, I still had to have regular doses of pain killers each month.

Anyway, into my 20's I decided that my body deserved a break from all these false hormones I was putting into it and so I came off the pill. I was also hoping, as Id been previously told by my GP that the pill may have resolved the problem, that the severe pains would not return. However, pain did get gradually worse over several months but I was determined not to go back on the pill.

The way the pain would happen, would be usually on my first 3 days of what would be a seven day bleed. This one month I had my period as usual but a day after it had finished I had very severe pain. I could not stand, move or nothing without being in excruitating pain. I was admitted to hospital where blood tests where taken, medical history etc. Blood test came back with infection and decided that due to where the pain was it could be my appendix and they wanted to remove it by laparoscopy but they also said that whilst they were carrying this out they would also get the gynea team down to see if there could be a problem in that area! I had the op and was told my appendix had adhesions on it and so that was probably the result of the pain and there was nothing else wrong with me!

Therefore I then believed that there was no explanation for the period pains Id suffered for years. So I continued on in my life. It was only when new colleagues at work realise that Id be regularly off with sickness/pain or would dash to the loos to be sick that they told me this isnt normal and I should seek further advice.

This time I returned to my GP, who is new and female. Previous GPs were all male. I explained everything too her and she suspected endometriosis and referred me to a specialist consultant straight away! After aninternal examination he could confirm that I had it but to what exten not sure so would need to do another lap. This was not even a year after my appendix op. The laparoscopy confirmed I had severe endometriosis. It was on my bowel (however I never had the symptons of this), my pelvis, my vagina, an ovarian cyst and other masses not attached. He said Id need to come back for all of this to be dealt with. When I asked how long he thought Id had this he replied 'all your life!' Therefore this was misdiagnosed in the previous lap I had for my appendix removal. He agreed that the pain I was suffering then was probably due to the endometriosis and particularly the cyst at that seems to be a cause of a lot of pain in people.

So I returned3 months later to have the op which meant getting rid of all the endometriosis. The op I was told was successful but recovery has been long. Im still have my follow up appointment to come in a few weeks and it is at this that I have many questions to be answered, such as how will this affect my fertility now that its all gone! How can I keep it at bay etc.

My advise to you is the only real way they can tell you what is wrong is to take a look inside you. fortunatley for me I knew my consultant had a good reputation as several people I know had had treatment from him in the past. If you can find someone you know is good, the better. Please dont sick back and accept it because for all you know the situation could be getting worse. Good luck
