Re: 2-day fast AND bowel prep pre surgery?From: anonymous@obgyn.netMon Feb 5 01:20:07 2007
Hi Kelly, I've had my first laparoscopy few days before Christmas and I've had to do the bowel-prep the exact same way you are being required to do. For two days prior to my surgery I had to drink nothing but clear fluids (apple, cranberry and white grape juices, popsicles, water and gatorade), and then I had to do an enema on the morning of the day before my surgery and I've also had to drink Fleet's Phosphosoda. This way my pelvic pain specialist/surgeon made absolutely sure that my bowels were completely clean. This may be due to the fact that I've had extreme endo pain with every bowel movement months before my surgery and she concluded that I have endo somewhere close to or right on my bowels, so she made me go through this extensive bowel-prep. I have to tell you though, I didn't really mind all of that, it wasn't hard to do (living on liquids for 2 days - I thought I'd get hungry and crave food but I didn't)....and in the end it all paid off. I did indeed have endo all over the bowel region and she managed to cut it out (I hope all of it) and then she went in with a laser and did quite a bit in other places - so she used the combination of cutting it out and burning it with the laser. I didn't immediately feel any benefits of this lap, actually my pain was worse for a few weeks, and just when I lost all hope - one month after the surgery all of a sudden, just like that my pain went away. I'm much much happier now and things are finally looking up for me. For reference, I've been in constant never-ending, horrible, crippling pain for one year and one month. This now is just absolutely wonderful, while it lasts...and I can only hope it will last. So I guess what I'm saying to you is that I've had that same exact bowel prep and it was well worth it....so go for it, it's not hard at all and good luck to you. I sincerely hope the surgery goes GREAT for you and that you have wonderful results afterwards. Just make sure you take lots of steps to prevent the flu which seems to be going around (at least in my area) because I've had the bad luck to catch it right after my surgery, when my body hadn't recuperated properly, and it sucked big time. Also, I had the most rotten luck to be given Phenergan for nausea/vomiting (and I saw somebody here suggesting it, might have been to you) - which caused me to end up in the ER because apparently that drug is as nasty as can be, and it gave me the most horrific reaction - seisures, muscle cramps, and lots of other bad symptoms. I am NEVER taking that again, so you just be careful. Best of luck to you, Inny.
