Re: how young can you get endo? - to AshleyFrom: D (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Jan 31 19:31:27 2007
Hi Ashley, Thanks for sharing your story. I also had a lap last year and the doctor didn't find any endo, but she didn't diagnose anything else either. Instead she sent me for a GI workup and MRIs, but The GI doc ruled out any gastrointestinal causes and the MRIs were negative. My pain and symptoms have only gotten worse the last 7 months, so the doctors are back to suspecting endo again and I'm heading for another lap, with an endo specialist this time. Endo is missed as much as 30% of the time by doctors that don't understand its many different manifestations, or don't search thoroughly. Even many women who are diagnosed still have endo that wasn't recognized at surgery and so they continue to suffer. It's important to remember that false negatives can cause big problems - not only will the pain obviously not get better, but without a diagnosis doctors may be reluctant to prescribe what is needed to manage it properly. It's also difficult to get insurance to pay for another surgery or other treatments when a doctor wrongly claims that you don't have endo - these are reasons I wish I had gone to an endo specialist right from the start. I'm glad you found a doctor who saw the real problem and you are getting help!
