Re: any recommends for doctors in DC or Northern VAFrom: Alyson (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Jan 3 10:21:54 2007
Well, I would say to use all of the resources on that site. Not only is there a patient recommended list, but there are links to groups created for that specific question. There are also links to American Medical Association resources in order to check out a doctor. Just do your homework. If you find a doctor I would set up an appointment to go in and talk about your symptoms and potential treatment ideas. If you don't feel like the doctor is on board with your ideas I wouldn't continue to go back. That is not to say that you shouldn't be open minded about their expertise, but there are occasions when you run into a doctor that is pushing one specific treatment, doesn't seem to listen to your concerns, or gives you incorrect information. That's when you thank them for their time and start looking again! I don't know how much testing your other doctor did to come to the conclusion that you have endo, but don't be surprised if the new doctor you see wants to do some additional tests (ultra sounds, colonoscopy, maybe even CAT scan) to make sure that there is not another issue that has similar symptoms. It really helps to do as much research on your own before you go into the appointment. If you are informed, it will help you recognize an ill informed doctor. Not all gynecologists (even the specialists) are up to date on this disease. It is important to mention that you cannot confirm an endo diagnosis without a laproscopic surgery and tissue biopsy (doesn't mean cancer, just means they look at the tissue to confirm that it is endometriosis). Here are a couple more sites for you: http://www.morehead.org/wellconnected/000074.htm (a good overview of endo and other pelvic diseases) http://www.endo-resolved.com http://www.pelvicpain.com I also highly recommend the Endometriosis Sourcebook by Marylou Balweg and the Endometriosis Association. You can order it form Amazon.com
