Leslie,

Don't feel bad, my doctor didn't tell me about the stages, either. Here are a couple of web-sites that explain the stages.

One web-site is http://www.morehead.org/wellconnected/000074.htm

This is what it states on there:

Staging Endometriosis

During laparoscopy, the surgeon determines the number, size, and location of endometrial implants and adhesions and uses this information to rank endometriosis by the extent of the disease and so the likelihood of infertility:

Minimal (stage I) Mild (stage II) Moderate (stage III) Severe (stage IV)

A number of experts do not believe these categories are useful, because they often do not relate to the intensity of the pain nor even to treatment success rates. Some experts believe it would be more accurate to further categorize endometriosis by the depth of penetration:

Superficial Endometriosis. Endometriosis that lies more on the surface is more highly associated with infertility than deep implants.

Infiltrative Endometriosis. Implants deeper than 5 to 6 mm; deep implants are believed to be the best indicator of progression and severe symptoms.

Another web-site is http://www.endo-resolved.com/. You have to click on the "Diagnosis of Endometriosis" tab for it to bring you to the part where it explains about the stages.

Here is what it states:

Stages of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is categorized in four stages based on the severity, location, amount, depth and size of growths.

Stage 1 - minimal disease, superficial and filmy adhesions Stage 2 - mild disease, superficial and deep endometriosis Stage 3 - moderate disease, deep endometriosis and adhesions Stage 4 - severe disease, deep endometriosis, dense adhesion

The stages of the disease do not indicate the level of pain, infertility or symptoms.

They are basically the same. The second one just breaks it down more so it is easier to understand. I hope this helps you.

Wish for pain free days to ALl......Pam
