Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: GnRH analogues = chemical castrationFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Aug 30 13:49:28 2006
I'm sorry, "chemical castration" is what Lupron and other GnRH analogues do to both men and women because they supress the sex organs at the pitutitary. They are used in men to treat prostate cancer (and these men get hot flashes and mood swings too). You can think of natural menopause as a slow castration...1-5 years from what I've read. In some ways this is a matter of semantics, but it's important. Talk about Lupron as menopause induced in a matter of weeks and you figure, "every woman goes though menopause, I'll be fine"...think about it as castration, as closer to surgical removal of the ovaries is, where you get menopause overnight, and there's more reason for concern.
>From the journal of the NAS (PNAS): "Beside having their chemical castration effects, GnRH analogues may suppress tumor growth in 33% of patients with estrogen-receptor-poor cancers (4)." http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/96/5/2361
>From wikipedia: "In 1941 Charles B. Huggins published studies in which he used estrogen to oppose testosterone production in men with metastatic prostate cancer. This discovery of "chemical castration" won Huggins the 1966 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.[64] The role of the hormone GnRH in reproduction was determined by Andrzej W. Schally and Roger Guillemin, who both won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work. Receptor agonists, such as leuprolide and goserelin, were subsequently developed and used to treat prostate cancer.[65][66]" [leuprolide = Lupron as far as I know] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostate_cancer PS I'd rather focus on what works to...but warnings are important too. I've read all the posts on this site with "lupron" in them...I'm far from the only one to feel strongly against this powerful drug. Maybe I'd feel less angry if I'd been on synral and been able to stop taking it when the effects got more terriable than the endo problems I had before.
