Re: ADVICE NEEDED: should I stop taking birth control pills?

K. I have been through the same conundrum. My doc has had me on Danazol for the past 4 months, Aygestin prior to that, Seasonale with a different doc prior to that....I have decided to go off the meds after seeking advice from an ObGyn that specializes in both traditional and alternative/natural medicine. In my case nothing has helped with the pain. Not surgery, not meds. The past four months on Danazol has made my hair fall out, I've gained another 15 lbs, and feel like I haven't slept in a year. In my case I also have poly cystic ovaries and I do not typically have a period if I am not on the pill. When I consulted the doc she indicated that the meds are prescribed in an effort to curb the estrogen dominance that women with endo typically have. She said that bcp's are meant to lessen the estrogen by replacing trciking your body into thinking it has already ovulated. She assured me that there is no medical danger in not taking the hormones, but that you are not doing anything to curb the estrogen if that is what you decide to do. So, we moved on to discussing natural progesterone cream. It is something that has been discussed alot on this site. Quite a few women here swear by it. The doctor's opinion is that the progesterone cream acts in much the same manner as the pill/hormone treatments, but because it is natural it does not carry the side effects. Her suggestion was to go to the health food store and look for natural progesterone cream with 4-5 mg of progesterone per dose and to stay away from Phytoprogesterone as that is made with compounds similar to estrogen. I am trying that along with an herb called Vytex for three months. If I do not find significant relief from that she will then prescribe bioidentical progesterone cream. That is made in a compounding pharmacy and is usually a much higher dose than what is sold in the health food store. I am also cutting all soy out of my diet, limiting alcohol and coffee, as well as high fat foods. Check out this web site: http://www.endo-resolved.com There is information about alternative treatments, the "endo diet", and progesterone cream. My only caution would be that you consult with a doctor before you stop taking any medications. Alyson
