Re: Hysterectomy For Endo?From: Alyson (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Aug 5 21:15:30 2006
Cindy, The suggestion of endometrial ablation operates on the assumption that endo is caused by retrograde bleeding (backward flow out the fallopian tubes). Some doctors who believe that is the cause of endo also believe that the endometrial ablation will stop the periods (by destroying the endometrium) and there for stop the endo. The problem with that is that no one is 100% convinced that endo is caused by retrograde bleeding. The same idea applies with the hysterectomy, only it goes farther in also removing the hormone cycle. From the research I've done, the best chance of either of those things working would be to be absolutely sure that ALL of the endo is removed at the same time of the proceedure. It is my opinion that in order to accomplish that one should seek treatment with an excision specialist. Again, that's just my opinion. Check out the Center for Endometriosis Care. Also do a search for Dr. Redwine, Dr. Cook, and Dr. Li (all endo specialists). There is a book called The Endometriosis Sourcebook that discusses the pros and cons of medical treatments including hysterectomy and hormone therapies. It may give you a good view of your options.
