Re: colonoscopy-AngieFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Jul 24 17:45:48 2006
Angie, A colonoscopy is not used to rule out IBS. A colonoscopy is used to rule out things such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (completely different from IBS) and ulcerative colitis. Lower GIs are another way they can check for IBD and UC. IBS is a syndrome comes in to the pic if the other tests came back normal. I have IBS and I can always tell when the pain of it acts up. I also know when it might be made worse by the constipation caused by the endo. I had drs try to tell me that my problem was IBS and I refused a lower GI the first time around b/c I was chicken. Second time around I asked for a colonoscopy b/c I would rather have had that than the lower GI knowing that it might show things that the lower GI couldn't and the dr refused. I refused the lower GI again but this time it was b/c I knew that the pain wasn't related to my IBS. It was indeed endo. And one way I knew that is when I felt my uterus and ovaries fall forward. Yes, I have a uterus that is tipped forward. But I wanted to let you know that colonoscopy can not rule in or rule out IBS. And if that's what the dr used as the procedure code to get coverage then there's something really wrong.
