Re: Endometriosis while on pill?

Hi Melissa, I actually had the same experience. I had been on the pill for about seven years with only an occasional spell of not taking it. When I was diagnosed I had been off the pill for a few months and wasn't having a period at all because I have polycystic ovaries. When I quizzed my gyno about it her answer was that I was having a period on the pill and some theories suggest endo can be caused by retro grade menstruation (backwards flow through the fallopian tubes) and that many birth control pills contain small amounts of estrogen (which can drive the endo). So, that was the explanation I got. I'm not sure that I think that is necessarily an accurate one, its just the one I was given. Like you, I wasn't having pain with my period (in fact I wasn't even having a period) and I was just having a mild stabbing pain that I attributed to my ovaries. I was extremely skeptical when they took me in for the lap, but sure enough she found several large areas of endo on my uterus and sacral ligament. I think it is definately worth looking into. Try to read up as much as you can before your appointment. I suggest asking the Gyn how much experience he/she has with endo and if you are diagnosed how he/she would treat it. I think it is important to know that before going through the diagnostic surgery with that doc. Especially because it is likely that if something is found the doctor will remove it while you are there. If you don't like the answers it would be a good idea to try to find an experienced doctor/surgeon before getting too far in the process. I like this web site for a good overview. Once you are a bit familiar with the types of treatments available look back through some posts here to see what everyone's experiences are. It will really help when talking to your doctor.
