Some thoughts about massage therayFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Mar 31 00:13:45 2006
Jenny, Massage is not supposed to hurt any way. If it is hurting they are supposed to stop, but sometimes it does hurt at first b/c of the muscles being tight but if the therapist is gentle they can work those areas without hurting you. B/c as I say it's not supposed to hurt. The purpose of massage is to relax the body. I've had massage therapy for my fibromyalgia and at first it worked. I don't take my pain pills all the time but even the times that I did it never affected my getting massages when I was getting them. The girl that did it for me to start off with was fantastic and I really felt like I was getting somewhere with my fibro but then when she left and a new girl came in it's like my fibro figured out what was going on and ran the other way. I wish I could have that girl that worked on me before do me again b/c she was really good. Part of what made her good was she only worked the main trouble area for my fibro which was my neck and shoulder areas. The other girl would do the whole body and that wasn't what I needed. I have to agree that massage two or three days after a lap is too soon. I would wait until after the post-op appt b/c by then you are in the clear. A word to everyone else if you decide to consider massage I am begging you to drink tons of water after that massage as it helps clear out the toxins that have risen to the surface. It's b/c of these toxins to the surface that some people get sleepy after a massage. Also, I found out that if you don't drink enough water it may make one of the chemicals from your liver show up in your urine as I found out.
