Clotting/ brown dischargeFrom: Sudsey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun Dec 18 09:21:24 2005
Clotting is not so abnormal though yes the freskish nature of it makes ones mind do tricks thinking this isn't right it's not normal.. Clotting the body's normal way of taking care of you by controlling bleeding..Many causes are a tilted uterus, polyups (little fig type things that hang down in the uterus) and hence trap blood, another cause is bleeding to heavily and not enough blood passed in time to stay unclotted..Blood pooling inside the uterus it is mixed with other cells too..The brighter the bloods color the quicker it's left the uterus the darker brown is older blood, usualy the blood is accumulating faster then the body can expell it.. Also playing into this ladies is the size of ones uterus, the uteru's ability to contract to push the blood out, diameter of the cervical cannal. polyups and adhesions play into this as an obstructive barrier for the flow/ and contracting of the uterus.. Even women without Endo have clotting many of these women have had multiple pregnancies where the uterus went from the normal size to pregnancy size and never shrank to it's pre pregnancy size hence the pooling in a larger uterus..Adenomyosis is another cause but not to jump ship in the mind set I must have that b/c I clot it's just one of the many causes..Hormones are another cause.. If you have not shed the uterine lining that can induce the thicker lining to when you have a period after prolonged suppression you'll more likely have those strange tissue like appearance clots..Gaining weight, loosing alot of weight also appear to play into it.. Clotting is at this time not made a direct corrilation to Endometriosis but I'd think safer to say it's more the treatments and hormone imbalances often induced by Endo that makes it more likely with Endo women.. If you have had a lap and adhesions formed they make it harder on the uterus to contract in it's normal fashion and hence ladies weird pains and pulling and what not.. C-section the uterus itself is cut and scar tissue can form and sections with such aren't going to contract as they did before the c-section.. I have had 5 children and 2 c-sections I have clots the size of softballs at times and it's just pooling from the heavy bleeding and often times it's if I've been sitting for any length of time or at night and get up to have them move down in a rather painful fashion..I also have the brown blood then bright red then brown for the whole second week of my periods like it can't make up it's mind if it's gonna stop or not.. Of course when it all began I thought something was terribly wrong.. It's not a pleasant experience b/c it can look like you just lost a huge section of your insides and it's not what we think of when we see a cut on our hand clot where it's not mixed with uterine lining cells it's just blood clotting but periods have mixed cells within that give that often raw liver appearance or fiberous like appearance to it..I would tell your Gyn though it never hurts to have them explain this to you either but I bet my life they will most likely give some of the same answers to this... Hope this helps those new to the whole clotting brown blood factor of a womens world.. Hugs Sudsey
