Re: nervous, please help!From: Alli (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Oct 25 21:46:21 2005
Amanda, The doctor will do a PAP test and a pelvic exam. He/She will also do a STD test and rule out pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause symptoms similar to endometriosis and cause problems conceiving. You will need to tell the doctor if you have a sexual partner, how many and if you use birth control when having sex. Obviously they need to know if you are sexually active and since you are trying to have a baby, I am guessing you are. If the doctor feels you are a candidate to see an OB/GYN (unless you are seeing one for the initial endo exam) they will refer you. The doctor will probably give you a few different courses of action to take. He/She may suggest taking birth control to help lighten your period, or suggest taking continuous BC pills to stop your period all together to help your body get a break from the painful periods you are having. However, to be 100% if you do have endo, you will need to have a laparoscopy to know for sure. Once you have a diagnosis then you can proceed with the best course of action to help deal with your results. If you are trying to have a baby I suggest having the surgery so you can rule out any other medical conditions. The doctor may want to perform a D & C on you to help you in your effort to conceive. You should talk to your sisters since they have endo and I am sure they will offer the support you need through this upsetting time. I hope this helps and good luck.
