Re: Pain Killer Addictions

Hi Tanya,

Here's some words from the land of "been there done that":

#1 It is extremely important that all prescribing doctors (people who are heavily addicted will usually have multiple doctors) MUST know what each other is prescribing and MUST know the amount of alcohol consumption and what other drugs: prescription, illicit or over the counter are being taken.

#2 Your aunt will NEVER admit nor believe that she is addicted to anything, that she is taking her medications improperly or that the alcohol consumption poses a danger. This is the addicted side of her reacting in self-preservation because if she admists it or believes it then she'll have to stop taking the drugs and drinking. Trying to talk to her about your concerns is about as useful as locking the doors on a windowless house. You should, however give it a shot, just in case she is open to reason.

#3 Alcohol, anti-depressants and pain killers do not mix - EVER! This is a potentially fatal mixture. At the very least she will OD sometime and get her stomach pumped and she'll brush it off that she "forgot" or "lost track".

#4 Somebody needs to inform her doctors of the concerns, it is up to the doctor to make sure that his/her patient is not being over-medicated or using their medication improperly. Knowledge of this behavior with no effort to correct can put the doctor in a very precarious legal and moral position and trust me, any doctor who shrugs off this responsibility is no better than the crack and meth dealers hanging around school playgrounds and parks.

#5 Your aunt, depending upon the drugs she's on and for how long, etc. may need professional help or the assistance of a treatment center to rid her body of all the addictive toxins.

Good luck with this!!
