Re: 24 and scaredFrom: Terrya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Sep 23 11:33:35 2005
Hi Ruth, I am 23 and have been diagnosed for about a year and a half. I think I have had endo for about 4 years. First of all...a hysterectomy is not a cure for this disease. People have hysterectomies and still suffer with endo pain. Have you researched on the internet about endo. There is a lot of good information out there. 2nd...is your doctor a regular OBGYN or an endometriosis specialist? I have seen 4 doctors for this disease and have finally found a specialist in my area. His practice is dedicated only to treating pelvic pain. He does not do regular GYN issues or OB. Doctors like this are much more knowledgable about endo. Unfortunately most people don't understand this disease including most doctors. I would recommend finding a specialist ASAP. 3rd...It seems that the most effective treatment for endo is excision surgery. This can be done either through an laparoscopy(tiny excisions using a camera to see inside) or a laparotomy(full open abdominal incision). I have had 2 laparoscopies with a regular OBGYN in which my endo lesions were cauterized (burned) not cut out. These provided minimal relief which is probably why I had surgery 2 times within 6 months. But this was before I decided to take things into my own hands and look for info for myself. You have to be knowledgable about the disease and treatment options and find a doctor who will listen to you and help you make the right decision for you. This is a great place to start. A lot of people on this board have been dealing with the disease for a while and are very knowledgable and everybody is nice. You can e-mail me if you ever want. I hope you feel better soon. Keep in touch. :-)
