Re: deciding to do a lapFrom: Alyson (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Aug 31 15:58:29 2005
Hi there, I just scheduled my second lap for October. I am also 28 and have not made any decisions about having kids yet. If your doctor thinks you have endo, then the lap will most likely be a diagnostic tool. The important thing to remember is that without any treatment your endo will only get worse (if that's what you have going on) which may threaten your fertility. You should be sure that you are clear with your doctor prior to surgery that preserving your fertility is your first priority. Doctors typically will not remove anything (organ wise) unless they ABSOLUTELY feel its necessary, and will be more conservative about that decision if you have stressed that you want to try to have kids soon. If you have the lap and they find endo, your doc will probably want to put you on some type of meds to keep it at bay for awhile until you are ready to start trying to get pregnant. In my opinion, if you do have endometriosis you are better off having the lap now. The doctor can clear out any endo on your ovaries, tubes, etc. that may affect your chances of getting pregnant. On another note, talk to your doc about whether he/she plans to cauterize or excise the endo implants. This can make a big difference in the progression of your disease. Mine were cauterized and I am now having to go in for my 2nd surgery in less than a year. If you want to talk more, feel free to e-mail me. Good luck! Alyson
