Is this endo? Anyone know a specialist in Nova Scotia? From: Lauren (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Jul 30 16:28:42 2005
I've always had bad periods. Very irregular and painful. I also have a history of depression and anxiety. I also have mild incontinence... and have since I was a child. At the time this struck I was not on medication, was amazingly dry and I was doing extremely well. I was 20 and in university at the time. Summer, I worked as a cashier. No heavy lifting. In June 2002, I hadn't had a period in about four months and was having a rather nauseatingly painful one. As such, I decided to start birth control. Exactly one month later, I'm doubled over in pain while at work, quite suddenly. I had to leave my job and return home where I was bedridden for about a month. The pain was in my lower left side and radiating around my lower back. I recovered and went to school, but was off my feet again in October and had developped migrains. I stopped birth control and started progesterone. From October to February I tried pain killers, antibiotics, dietary changes (no wheat or dairy)... But walking or sitting too long just brought pain back. I had blood work done to check my hormones, iron levels, etc etc. The only things that came back was a slightly elevated white blood cell count, mild iron and mild calcium deficiencies. The pain remained on my left side and lower back and had now spread to include my legs on occasion. I had several ultra sounds, a CAT scan and urine analysis, all which came back with nothing. In February, I underwent exploratory surgery: laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and D&C. I felt great after this. I had a relatively pain free period in March, period symptoms in April-June, but no blood. I get periods off an on about three or four months apart. I started Celexa and added Welbutrin into the mix in late March or early April. I didn't recover emotionally and had a family emergency thrown into the mix. I withdrew from a few classes and scraped past in others. I went home and started to work (office job). December 2004 rolls around and I get some more pains with my period, though not badly. January they turn bad. I leave work once again. Another in March, which hurt a bit and this one now which hurt a lot more. I've been treated for IBS (which the specialist I saw did NOT think I had and didn't understand why I was being treated for it) and have had a colonoscopy to be sure. No significant results. My current doctor seems stuck on the idea that this is in my head. While that may be a possibility, I wouldn't think stretching or walking would cause pain if that were the case. I'm currently on gabapentin (treatment resistant anxiety [a psychiatrist decided depression was secondary to the anxiety])and have been for two months. During my period (which hurt) my moods were fine. After my period they dropped, but not alarmingly. It was after my period that the pain turned sharp. I need to know two things: are there endo specialists in Nova Scotia? Should I continue looking into endo as a possibility? Sorry about the length.
