Guess what, if you want to stop the depo provera then you have the right to tell your doctor, "no more" and he/she has the obligation of listening to you and respecting your wishes. He/she also has the obligation to thoroughly inform you of the reasons for and against stopping AND continuing the drug so you can make an informed decision.

Depo provera is not without long-term affects which must be taken into consideration. My sister-in-law was on it for 5 years and she gained almost 80 kgs. She's been off it now for almost 2 years and has lost all but about 5 kgs of that.

You will gain weight on depo provera but the good news is, if you cut all white flour/white sugar based carbs out of your diet and substitute them with whole grain/brown breads, pastas and rice. Skip the potatoes and corn and stick to leafy greens, garden salads, lean meats, legumes, fruits and water (cut out the soda and limit diet sodas to rare) then you will lose the weight pretty quickly. (Barring any other condition that would interfere). You don't have to wait to go off the drug to change your diet, do it now and you will be amazed how easy it is.

Also, try eating smaller meals with a small snack between rather than one big meal or 3 regular meals... your body is under a certain amount of stress from the endo and more stress from the depo which forces your body to release cortisol which then forces your body to store fats in preparation for dealing with the stress. You have to then force your body to work more efficiently and harder at finding the fats to store.

Whole grain carbs take longer for your body to consume. They add fibre to your diet and will make you feel fuller longer thereby acting as an appetite suppressant of sorts. White flour/white sugar carbs have a higher sugar content and begin to form gas almost immediately after you swallow (that's why you probably feel bloated after eating pizza or spaghetti or other high carb dishes). It's all about chemical reactions that happen inside your body when food meets digestive juices.

After a few weeks you'll notic you feel a little lighter, a little more energetic and at first the weight will move slowly but by about the 2nd or 3rd month it will start to really fall off at a good easy, steady pace if you exercise daily. You don't have to do anything heavily strenous, a 20 minute walk once or twice a day will produce a noticeable difference.

Weight gain CAN increase the amount of pain you feel because of the added pressure to your back and all the supporting structures in your back, abdomen and pelvis. Women with endo who gain weight (and it's so easy to do between feelling like crap 99% of the time and drug side-effects) really have to be vigilant with their diet and exercise routine. A lot of foods that produce gas should be avoided, at least during the last 1/2 of your cycle, because again, the added pressure of the gas and bloating will make you hurt more.

Good luck - and do some really thorough research before you next meet with your doctor. Go armed with knowledge and confidence in your decision whatever it may be. Take printed pages of information if you need to.
