Are you sure you have the name of the drug correct? I checked at http://www.rxlist.com and cannot find a listing for Vitex but did find Videx. It's an HIV drug with some really serious potentially fatal side-effects.

Vidaza which also comes up in a search for Vitex is an antineoplastic (cancer) drug.

Try getting the name of the drug again and look it up on rxlist.com or come back here with it and see if anyone can answer your questions. If you are not in the US or Canada then please also include the name of your country.

Basically though, if the drug she is taking is a hormone-based drug then yes, mood swings, personality changes and irritability are quite common side-effects and will have varying degrees of severity. Some women suffer horribly from just birth control pills and so stronger hormones can seriously make them appear to be 'heading off the deep-end'. The worst part, at least it was for me, was the feeling of disassociation I had. It was almost as though I was watching all of it from a little window inside myself. The sane, balanced, stable, rational unmedicated bit of my real self that was left was horrified by the irrational, emotional pendulum of a crazy woman I was watching fly from tears to blind rage in a blink. It scared the helloutta me and those were supposedly the lowest dose available.

Many other drugs do list a variety of side-effects which can include mood and personality alterations. It is not a sign of addiction. Addiction is when you need the substance for no other reason than you are craving it. Again, if the drug is a hormone replacement therapy drug then yes, going off of it could cause menopausal-type symptoms to return if that is the reason for taking it in the first place.
