Re: Lupron for extended time, side effects and long term problemsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon Feb 28 11:26:16 2005
Hi there, I would wait and let Lupron be your last resort. I started all types of meds when I was 17 years old and I regret being on them all! Lupron has so many side effects that your doctors don't tell you about. When I was in my early twenties, I started Lupron, my doctor told me there were no side effects and that it would suppress my endo. I was on it for several months before the panic attacks started. I would cry all day and would not leave my home for fear that something might happen to me. My boyfriend (now husband) noticed a major change in my personality and moods. After telling my parents and boyfriend about how I was feeling, the convinced me to go and get a full physical and to see a therapist. I told this to my OB/GYN and how I felt like I was going crazy and his response to me was if the entire test come back negative, you might be going crazy!! The bottom line was the entire test came back negative and my estrogen was extremely low, which was causing all these psychological problems. I stopped the Lupron and within a year I was feeling better. When I went to a specialist for endo and told him my situation, she was not surprised to hear about my side effects and told me they were very common. Several years later, I went to Emory University to have surgery by Dr. John Rock, who specializes in endo and told him my past he also was not surprised to hear about my side effects. I need to go on a drug for three months prior to my surgery, he put me a Danazol. Danazol is almost identical to Lupron without many of the side effects. There are still side effects – weight gain, acne, constant hunger, hot and cold flashes (horrible night sweats) and some mood swings but in my opinion nothing near the side effects of Lupron. If your doctor tells you there are no side effects switch doctors as fast as you can! Also, your daughter is very young; something you need to consider is your daughter’s fertility. I did not and I not able to have children. You might want to consider seeing a specialist for Endo. I see an IVF doctor not for trying to get pregnant but she has been able to remove cysts were other doctors were not, she also is on the cutting edge of anything new regarding endo. I hope this helps you Ceci
