Re: Lupron for extended time, side effects and long term problemsFrom: D.N. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun Feb 27 12:52:53 2005
Hi Joanne, I have never been on Lupron, but it was suggested to me at one point after having a hysterectomy and almost both of my ovaries removed (I have ovarian remnant syndrome). I am not a youngster, but I declined Lupron because of the side-effects. I have heard that some docs are recommending using Lupron before doing surgery to see if it helps improve the symptoms. I can't say if that is a good idea or not. I would just be very wary, especially with a 15 year old girl. Endometriosis really puts us in a Catch-22. We need to know if that is what we have, but then surgery can cause its own problems. Especially being so young, she may face multiple surgeries, and that is what the docs are probably thinking. The more surgeries, the more adhesions. On the other hand, taking a drug that causes menopausal type symptoms and possible bone loss in a young girl- is that acceptable? All I can suggest is getting several different opinions. Not just from docs in the same group. Perhaps seek out a reproductive endocrinologist or someone who specializes in endo, which is not always easy to find. Personally, it is my gut feeling that a laparscopy should be done to see what is going on. I was misdiagnosed with IBS for several years before I found out for sure it was endo at the time of my hysterectomy for fibroids. For me, the misdiagnosis just delayed getting the proper treatment. Sometimes they are using birth control pills continuously and that might be an easier route to try before doing Lupron. I hope this info helps. Best wishes to you and your daughter.
