Re: Hoping for a suggestion or two!From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Feb 18 09:59:22 2005
Heather, the first thing you have to do is explain to your family and anyone else you come in daily contact with that you are on medication and 'mood swings from hell' are an unfortunate side-effect. Let them know you will do your very best to control yourself but if they see you having a difficult moment or day then they need to just let you have a few minutes to yourself to gather yourself together. Just as it isn't fair for you to snap at them, it isn't fair for them to be pushing your buttons when you're incapable of tolerating your buttons being pushed. And the next thing you have to do is try, really hard to recognize the onset before you explode. Once you learn to recognize the boil beginning then get yourself off on your own. Go take a brisk walk around the block, use the stairs, some sort of brisk physical activity to burn off the excess hormones which are causing the mood swings. Before you return to the person/people you were dealing with, take a quick stop in the washroom to put some cool water on your face and importantly, the back of your neck and your upper chest. Get a nice long drink of cool water and then you should be ready to go. If you find that this does not help and no other 'self-comfort' tricks in your memory are working, THEN seek out some medicinal aid. You really don't want to go on mood-altering drugs if you can avoid it, one less drug, one batch of fewer side-effects is always better if you can do it. For some women, the mood swings are just too much to handle, other's seem to manage fairly well, just depends upon your own chemical make-up and that is not within your control so you don't want to feel guilty for needing medicinal aid but you also don't want to turn to it too quickly. Lastly, at the end of the day, don't forget to tell the people you love that you do and be sure to soothe any injured feelings.
