Re: Depo Provara ShotFrom: laura (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Jan 10 17:13:28 2005
Hi Caryn, I also have good and bad things to say. I was on Depo shots for about four years. It kept my period away and I was relatively pain-free. At least I had that whole time to recover from a lap and look at my choices. BUT the side effects from the Depo began slowly and continued to get worse over time. These included headaches with pain in the base of my skull and jaw that lasted for weeks, irritability, insomnia, sweating, joint pain and mood swings. My hair was falling out and bone loss was another concern. I gained 40 pounds, mostly in the abdomen. I was okay with that but my clothes didn't fit anymore! When I tried to switch to birth control pills, my periods were too painful to take and I went right back on the Depo. I had suicidal thoughts in the days right before or after the injection that would come and go so randomly, I think they were hormonal. I finally opted for a partial hysterectomy. This surgery was a much bigger deal than I thought it would be and the recovery is much longer, too. BUT I'm enjoying getting my libido back, feeling less irritated and much more mellow. I lost weight, I'm happy and I can sleep. I think the effect of Depo is different for each person and it's important to weigh the good and the bad before you make an important decision. The nice thing about the Depo is that it's easy to change your mind later. Laura
