Gender Specific Medicine - 'Women are more than just boobs and tubes'From: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Dec 24 05:51:49 2004
Hello to one and all. I'm an old, semi-returning member...I check the site periodically to see what's going on in here, etc. Some may or may not know me (if you've been around a while, you'll recognize my sign-off) I've popped in today because I hadn't seen, although may have missed it, any post about the new book and study done by Dr. Marianne Legato, internist and also editor of The Journal of Gender Specific Medicine and Gender and Health. Her study along with other physicians has found, not surprisingly to any of us, that "Women are more than just boobs and tubes." In fact, every organ system in the body is different between men and women BUT when students go to med school their primary study examples are male systems, with very little attention paid to the female body. Other than when discussing the differences between sex organs, and even there some areas are sorely lacking, much of the focus is on treating, understanding the human body as if it were, we ALL ARE MALE. Hence, many misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed, wrongly prescribed medications (did you know women absorb antibiotics differently than men and yet we are not part of most studies when pharmaceuticals test their products, however they do market their product FOR us?) Women's brains are different from men...we all knew that, right? But there's a reason women tend to recover more quickly from strokes than men....I could go on and on here. How does this pertain to endo? How many of us have had hysts? How many were misdiagnosed? How many don't feel they are treated properly by their physicians whether primary, OB/GYN or other specialists? How many are in chronic pain with no end seemingly in sight? How many have auto-immune disorders? Shall I go on? When I heard of this journal I started researching and you can too! The idea is still new and not every doctor is embracing the concept, but it doesn't hurt to try. I did a brief Google search before I logged on this AM and here's what I came up with (you might find others on Netscape) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Dr.+Marianne+Legato+-+Gender+Specific+Medicine&btnG=Search My best to one and all. Wishing you as many pain free moments as possible. Happy holidays to everyone and to all Angels out there, here's to remembering the good times. Peace, love, light and hope... Namaste, Sally, Goddess of Lightness and Being
