Recurring Endometriosis

I keep reading about how full hysterectomy with full removal of the ovaries is a cure-all for this disease and I know from personal experience it is not.

I had a hysterectomy in June 1984 (I was only 21 years old) due to endometriosis (performed by Dr. Charles Thomas, Indianapolis, he is now retired but was in a group called Indianapolis Gynecologists), during this surgery they left ½ of one ovary (thought they removed both at the time but that is another story in itself), 4 years later (1988) had to have surgery again for recurrence of endometriosis (same doctor) and thought ‘okay, that’s it…no more ovary for sure, so no more endometriosis again’.

Not so…9 years later in 1997 I had a recurrence of endometriosis verified through two laparoscopic surgeries and video was shown to me (I actually have the video around here somewhere). The gynecologist/fertility specialist was so baffled since I had no ovaries that he ran tests to search for the presence of ovarian tissue and all of them came back negative for any ovarian tissue. The recurrance had almost taken over my left side abdominal wall and colon.

I was told at that time that under the conditions they found it appeared that endometriosis could spread without the aid of ovarian tissue and that this may be an ongoing problem throughout my life ...to the extent of possible 'moving throughout' any of my abdominal organs'.

Here is the doctor who performed the last surgery (he is also a fertility specialist):

JAMES DONAHUE, MD 8051 S EMERSON AVE # 460 Indianapolis, IN 46237 Phone: (317) 865-0411

I feel that had I been conservative (no hysterectomy) I would have had the same problems anyway. I feel that as a woman I am forced to let others know of this experience and know that hysterectomy is not a cure for this life long disease. I have noticed in recent years that several websites have eliminated their old statements of 'However, only surgical removal of both ovaries prevents endometriosis from recurring', but many are still saying this and it is just not true.
