lupron - weigh the pros and consFrom: April (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Nov 29 23:07:27 2004
Hi everyone! I agree that lupron is everyone's personal choice. I do think that everyone needs to weigh the pros and the cons before making a decision, though. The problem is that when most women are told that they need to go on it. , it IS made out to be a miracle drug and that it is their only chance. As far as I know, there are no long-term studies done on side effects that never really go away, so the docs don't realize the problems it can cause. I had a horrible experience with it and still deal with daily joint pain and I only received 3 shots and that was 3 years ago. But, I can honestly say that I never tell someone not to take the shot. We need to know that it is only a temporary fix and while it may help, it does have risks. I was never told that or I probably would not have taken it. I am a nurse and I work with 4 docs. Believe me, they don't know everything. In fact, they learned alot because of what happened to me. My advice is this--- before taking a medication, research it and learn everything there is to know about it. Then, weigh the pros and cons and decide what is best for you. Don't just listen to everyone else. When you are desperate, most people will try anything. Believe me, I know how that is. I flew all the way to California(I live in Indiana) to have surgery with Dr. Cook. There are other alternatives that some people may not realize are there. I know that not everyone can do what I did, but I was able to get insurance to pay 100% after my out-of-pocket maximum was met. Recently my 16 year old cousin was told she needed to start Lupron. The only thing her Dr. told her mom was that she would have some hot flashes and that was it. They knew absolutely nothing about the drug, but were ready to start it. After learning more about it, they decided not to do it and are actually heading to California to have surgery. I just wish there had been someone to tell me to look into it further! I have a great OB/GYN and I don't blame him. They only tell you what they are told!! Good luck to everyone no matter what you decide to do! Just PLEASE remember, ask questions and research like crazy!!!
