Re: which is better: get pregnant now or wait after having a surgery to remove endo? From: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun Nov 21 19:47:00 2004
Jenny, If I was your friend, I would go ahead and try to get pregnant, and then if I wasn't getting pregnant after a while, I would consider surgery. That's the choice I have made for myself, actually. It is true that pregnancy can be good for endo -- at least while you are pregnant, your hormones change so that the endo doesn't grow while you're pregnant. For some people, this means they feel good even for a while after being pregnant. For some people, the pain comes back right away. "Pregnancy is the best cure for endo" is a common myth perpetuated by doctors. According to the endo association, pregnancy will not necessary have that desired effect. But, I can tell you, when I was pregnant, almost all my symptoms went away and I felt great. I did miscarry though. According to the endo association (they have a large registry of information provided by women with endo), women with endo do have a higher chance of miscarrying, statistically. My GYN wouldn't tell me that though. There is a lot of contradiction among doctors, because A. endo is a mysterious disease and B. many doctors don't stay current. The reason I am trying for pregnancy before I have surgery is that there are no guarantees for surgery, either, and also because I'm willing to give pregnancy a chance at helping the endo feel better. If your friend does go for surgery, the reading I've been doing tells me not all surgeons are created equal. It's worth finding a good one. Good luck! -Anna
