Dear Tricia,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Are you being treated for bone density? My dad has osteoporosis (and my aunt, as did my grandma) and he takes medication that helps add calcium. I think he's taking fosimax (sp). Is your doctor discussing these options with you? Or is he/she willing to? If not, I would see a different doctor.

Since you know now that your bone density is low, now is the time to find out what your options are for at least keeping the level of density you now have, if not adding to it. Based on my family's experiences with osteoporosis, there is no reason to wait till the disease is progressing. The sooner the better, when it comes to treatment. That's only my opinion based on my family's experiences, but I feel strongly. Your bones might not become denser with calcium/vD supplements alone. Your doctor can help you decide if it is the right time to take medication that helps your bones add density. There are some side effects to the meds, such as irritibility, if I remember right, but honey, please look into it. Osteoporosis is not something you want to wait on.

Keep up informed and my heart goes out to you.

-Anna
