Re: ABNORMAL PAP

Sarah,

I have had my fair share of abnormal paps. I have had two colpo's done and a leep. Lucky for me (sarcasm) my ex-husband was unfaithful and gave me dysplasia/HPV (aka genital warts) which is what was causing the paps to come back abnormal. BE SURE to have someone go with you for the procedure. They do not need to be in the room with you (unless it makes you more comfortable), but you will cramp immediately after the procedure and will not want to drive yourself home.

During the procedure, your doctor will coat your cervix with a solution almost like peroxide, which will allow them to see any lesions, they will then pinch a piece of each lesion to run tests to see if it is cancerous. Usually they do a thin scrape of the cervix to remove any of the bad cells. You typically are fine to work the next day, however I recommend doing the procedure as late in the day as possible and on a Friday if you can. You will have a discharge which will look like pieces of skin that will last for a few days (this is just from where they scraped the cervix).

For the most part it's a simple procedure, but you will not feel like doing anything that night! You will also be required to go in every 3-6 months for a year for paps. As long as you don't have another abnormal one within a year, you will then go back to yearly testing.

The good news is that once my ex-husband was out of the picture, I went back to having normal paps. I still have HPV but (knocking on wood) I have had normal paps for 2 years now!

Good luck! If you have any questions, or just need to talk feel free to e-mail me at aswester13@yahoo.com.
