Re: Lasor or cutting out endo? To StacieFrom: Chris (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Oct 29 21:34:02 2004
Hi Stacie, You really have to dig to find this info. So little is actually known about endometriosis. I think that not all surgeons cut the endo out because there is much controversey about which is better. I think the biggest factor is that the laser is easier and cutting takes more skill. The laser is easier because it cauterizes and stops bleeding easier. This is what I have gathered through what I have read. My endo came back really bad after my first surgery with laser. I hope that cutting it out this time really gives me more relief. Dr. Reich believes that if all the endo is removed down to the root, it won't grow back. He says that there is always microscopic endo left behind, but it should never come back as bad as I had it. I hope he is right. I don't live near Michigan. I live in New Jersey. You should look for an endometriosis specialist. And ask lots of questions. Especially concerning bowel endo and obliteration of the cul-de-sac if you have it...a lot of doctors completely ignore this area because it is difficult. You want to know if your surgeon will treat these areas and if he/she will use sharp disection. You also want to know their laparoscopic ability. A lot of surgeons will cut you open because of difficulty and lack of skill laparoscopically. This happened to me with my first surgery with my regular obgyn (the one who used laser). He also cut me open instead of doing it laparoscopically. This causes so many more problems with adhesions! Here are some websites where you can look up endometriosis specialists: http://www.geocities.com/endometriose/endolinks.html http://www.endoangels.com/links.html http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8509/endokit.html I'm sure others would be able to maybe give you suggestions for a specialist in your area if you ask on here. Unfortunately, a lot of the specialists don't deal with insurance and you have to pay them up front. I wonder if things would be the same if men got endo? I hope I have helped some. Feel free to e-mail me if you want to. Chris
