Re: Going off of long term pain meds? From: Angie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Oct 25 15:01:24 2004
Thank you Lisa!! Yours is the first positive message I have seen. I guess I will expect the worst, then if it's not that bad I will be very pleasantly surprised!! Here's the weird thing. My pain mgmt doc told me I should only take the MS Contin on my pain days (5 days at ovulation, 5 days with period). Then I had a follow up appt about a week later with the nurse practitioner, he said I had to take them daily which was consistent with the research I did on chronic pain treatment. So 2 months go by and I see the doctor again. He's wondering why I'm taking the meds daily. ??? I told him the NP told me to. He said why take them every day when you only have pain 10 days per month? It was weird.. like being put between the two of them. I asked him if I would have withdrawals if I stopped taking them, he said he didn't think so but if I did I could just take them daily. By the way, the NP told me I would have withdrawals if I stopped and started which is also consistent with the research I have done. ANYWAY, I tried to stop taking them and it didn't work. I got chills, sweats, the works. So the doctor said OK, take them daily. So when it's time to go off of them, I am praying that the NP is the one to taper me off of them rather than the doctor. He seems absolutely clueless about withdrawal!! He also told me that the length of time you take the drug is irrevelant to withdrawal. He said it would be the same if you took the MS Contin for 1 day or 1 year. I'm thinking WTF????? PS: Anyone please feel free to email me!! Thanks again, Angie
