They actually always just sedate you first while they intubate you. I don't know of any doctor that would do a laparoscopy with a local or regional anaesthetic. A local would hurt like hell, because it's only the skin and underlying tissues that would be frozen. A regional would be difficult too, because they have your head lower than your body, so it would be quite uncomfortable. They also need to relax all of your muscles in your abdomen, and they need a general to do that as well. Try to make an appointment with your anaesthetist before your surgery to talk with her before your lap. I did that before my first lap, and I found it very helpful and it eased my nerves a lot too.
