Re: anesthesia and laparascopy

Hi Sharon,

I read that laparoscopy would be too difficult to do while the patient is awake. The reason is because they blow your abdomen up with CO2, and it would be extremely difficult for you to breathe and the patient could also vomit because of the amount of CO2 they pump you up with. I have a freind who also has a difficult airway and he needed to have his gallbladder removed. What they did with him was they didn't put him under anesthesia before trying to insert the breathing tube. Instead they sedated him and tried to insert the tube first. Unfortunately, they weren't able to insert the tube and had to put off the surgery, but he was fine because they didn't give him the anesthesia first. I hope this helps you.
