Re: 1st laparoscopyFrom: Jude (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Sep 22 18:25:08 2004
Dear Jen, First of all, the best of luck with your first lap, I will be thinking of you and hope it goes well. It sounds like you are most worried about the anaesthetic? From my personal experience on anaesthetics it's really important to tell you anaetheatist if you get motion sickness (e.g. car sick). I do, and as a result get really sick, that is vomiting and turning deathly pale in the recovery ward. When I told my anaetheatist he mixed me up a special "cocktail" as he called it to stop the vomiting after surgery in the recovery ward. It really worked a treat and so now on every time I have surgery I make sure I write "bad nausea" on the pre-op form and tell the anaethatist in person. What else...The drugs in the anaesthetic make me quite sleepy for several days and some people I talk to say they find themselves getting spontaeously sleepy at about the same time every day the original anaesthetic was given. The positive side to this is if you haven't been sleeping well because of the endo pain, now is your chance to catch up. You may also find you get bad shoulder tip pain from the gas used to inflate you. It will pass in about three days, however a wheat pack is a godsend for relieving that particular pain. Also, the nurses will show you how to get out of bed after abdominal surgery...there is a trick to swinging your legs off the side first. In general, just take things slowly, make sure you have someone to drive you home and stay around to look after you. You may find it difficult to open cupboards and the fridge, so I get my husband to leave food, drink, cutlery and plates out on the bench so I don't have to bend down and open cupboards. Avoid doing any lifting, especially stuff like hanging out the washing for a couple of weeks. I hope this helps, Jude.
