About those natural alternativesFrom: Lea (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Jul 5 14:47:47 2004
One thing you need to keep in mind is that not all 'natural' products are what they may appear to be. You absolutely must carefully read the labels and become familiar with what the ingredients really are. For instance, not all milk alternative soy based products are lactose free. If, for example, you are lactose intolerant and buy certain brands of 'soy cheese' you will be unpleasantly surprised to find that there is nearly as much lactose in it as regular dairy cheese. If you are allergic to shellfish then it is a matter of life and death that you read labels very carefully. The Silk brand of soy milks are all processed with sea salt which can lead to anaphalactic shock and death. Some Starbucks use the Silk soy products but do not feel it is important to post advisories. Vitamins and herbs are not regulated in the same way as food and drugs so please, for your own safety, stick to buying them from companies you know and trust even if it is a little more expensive then the offers you get via email and the Internet. Be patient and give yourself a couple of weeks to adjust to the dietary changes you make before giving up on them. You may also find it helpful to learn exactly how certain nutrients are used by the body so you can make adjustments to fit your own needs.
