Re: The reason for a bowel prep

Hi Kristy,

I hope you are doing well. I wanted to say that I agree 100% about being bowel prepped for any abdominal surgery. For those who don't know my story, I was not told to be bowel prepped before my hyst. The hyst was primarily for fibroids, but endo was strongly suspected. I should have been bowel prepped because my sigmoid colon/uterus and left ovary were all adhered together. It was a very close call for me because the surface of the colon was denuded. The docs were very concerned that it was perforated. Thank goodness, it wasn't. Even for a laparoscopy- make sure you are bowel prepped. All it takes is a nick or if your organs are stuck together, and you could end up with horrible complications or worse.

The only other thing is that mag citrate by itself I don't think is completely adequate bowel prep. I demanded to be bowel prepped when I had my second surgery. I had to eat a clear liquid diet for several days along with the mag citrate, an enema and antibiotics. Even for tests like a flexible sigmoid, they have you do the clear liquids and multiple ways of bowel cleansing- like Fleet prep kit.

No, bowel prep is not fun, but the consequences are much worse.

Best wishes, D.N.
