The reason for a bowel prepFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Jun 25 15:15:40 2004
I'm going to repost something I said the other day for you all so that it hopefully be of help: "One who is having a laparoscopy to check for endo should have a bowel prep any way regardless of whether endo is on the bowel or not. The reason is b/c even just being in there to do the surgery they could accidentally puncture the bowel. If the bowel prep is not done and the bowel is full and your bowel is punctured you run the risk of major infection." Some have said that a bowel prep is only for if they are going to work close to the bowel removing endo and that is not correct. Bowel preps need to be done for any kind of abdominal surgery (yes, laparoscopy is abdominal surgery even though it's minimally invasive as far as the kind of incisions) to prevent from the possibility of the above. The above can happen at any time when they are in there working, it's not just for when endo is suspected around the bowel. Any dr who orders a bowel prep for their patients is doing a good job of making their patients safe and protecting them from the above possibility. If your dr does not and you are going to have laparoscopy or any other abdominal surgery pls buy something like Mag Citrate for example and do it yourself. It's better to be safe than sorry.
