Re: Scared!From: Anne-Marie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue May 11 20:56:12 2004
Hi There, I can understand your fear as I had two caesareans with spinal blocks and the first one was very very scary. Basically imagine about four or five people surrounding you as you perch on an ironing board sized bed with a backless gown on and your feet teetering on a stool and one person shoving a needle in your back at the same time as two others put needles in the backs of both hands. One person plugging a pair of suction pads on your chest to monitor your heart beat--no joke! They have to move fast and this is what happens. I had three epidurals with my vaginal deliveries and so I wasn't bothered about the block in the back--it was having the block done whilst the other guys faffed around at the front putting the other lines in. LOL! Nightmare on Caesarean street! Anyway, I can say to you that having other surgery is less traumatic. My second caesarean wasnt as bad as I knew what to expect and I popped a valium pill. LOL! I did have a D&C and cautery at aged 20yo and it was less traumatic as the caesarean as they gave me a pre med. I did have a little panic in the lift on the way down to the theatre and cried, but as soon as they got me in theatre, the anaethetist shoved the line in and I was out to it and that was it. You then wake up and it seems like you have only been out to it for a few seconds. I dont know of course about the laparoscopy--and after having a caesarean and being awake, I think I'd prefer being awake then they can discuss what they are doing as they do it actually. However, I have the impression that they put you out to it, so ce la vie. Just get a valium pill of the nurses well before your op then you can remain reasonably calm. You'll be fine. If you have been through a caesar awake you can go through any operation with anaesthetic. Less stress for one being put to sleep.
