Re: Laparscopy and Adesions/Possible EndoFrom: Anne-Marie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue May 11 03:36:45 2004
I will elaborate a little further on my situation. I have five children. Three born vaginally, and two by caesarean. First caesar was 1998 due to placenta praevia. Second was ceasarean at my request because I already had bladder pain almost monthly but scans showed nothing. I had a lot of discomfort in the last months of that pregnancy and knew I wouldnt be able to cope with a normal vaginal delivery. I also knew it was my last child and wanted a tubal ligation. This they did in the last op. So my family is complete. The other side of things is that I am the type of person that hates drugs. Lupron--bone loss. Pain killers---muscle mass loss and masking of pain that may be serious. Anti depressant---ok for short term, but should not rely on them rest of my life. Most of these seem like your typical bandaid approach. I can't live with pain killers three weeks in four and if it came to the crunch, hysterectomy would be the better option if value my bladder and peace every month. I was pretty much beat when I posted the other day and backed into a corner. Then I researched adhesions and what they are and how they form and why they form. Infection, inflammation and lack of movement. I ahve come to a decision that if the surgeon is willing to try, I am willing to try to get them sepearated and then do everything I can before the op and after to get myself fit and healthy for the op. Build up my immune system. Make sure I get a course of anti bitoics following surgery for a couple of weeks to avoid infection. Take something like bromelain and calc fluor to inhibit fibrin because without fibrin--adhesions cannot form. Take good pain killers such as NSAIDS for the week following surgery which also inhibit fibrinogen. Most importantly, practise yoga as a gentle form of exercise to increase my ability to stretch and move. I think if I can be more flexible, that yoga could help after surgery to keep organs moving often over each others and reduce the possibility of adhereing. I've come to the conclusion that a lot of the time we expect miracles to happen when we need to take control of what is happening and just reduce some of the risks that can occur. Improving my diet now and making sure I eat well after surgery. When I had those sections I was obese, ate rubbish, had bad immune system, did not weight train or exercise, I never moved let alone exercise. I didnt take multi vitamins. To be honest it is no surprise I ended up with such bad adhesions. After studying the last few days into everything I can see all the things I did wrong after surgery. I realise it was major abdominal surgery and folks cannot move, but I would hope laparoscopy is far more delicate and not so invasive. I was in so much pain the other night I went to my Doctors and he prescribed Amitriptyline for my bladder. It worked well to block pain. I went out and bought a Quercetin and bromelain complex and calc fluor the day after and within one dose my pain had gone completely. Reading further about bromelain I noted that is is a protease enzyme that thins blood some and increases circulation and also works as a great anti inflammatory and acutally that studies have shown a reduction in adhesion formation in those that took bromelain. They advise to take 3 days before surgery and up to 2 weeks after surgery to avoid adhesions forming which are formed from fibrinogen. Basically, I have made the decision to go ahead with the laparoscopy and trust the surgeon can seprate them. I even read that bromelain in high enough dose can reduce fibrin tissue...it eats dea tissue in the body. Worth a shot right??? I was cynical when I first read it but after seeing tons of studies I'm convinced that it will help me some as well as getting as fit as possible and as healthy as possible before surgery takes place. The fitter you go into surgery, the fitter you come out of it right? Stand to reason. Thanks for your replies. Hopefully I can come back after my surgery and report that I am much better.
