First of all I feel since you are 18 and have had problems with your periods you really need to have an exam done and they do have to do one before prescribing any meds (that is what I was told, might not be true). It is scary on your first visit but they are as gentle as they can be and it shouldn't hurt that bad. I have had more than my fair share of pelvic exams and none of them are comfortable (I have a very tipped uterus so mine hurt more than they are supposed to) but they are necessary to make sure nothing else is wrong.
