Re: covery time after lap and possible side effects?

Hi Pat,

Each person's recovery time is different, but I had a laparoscopy in September and went home for my cousin's wedding for 10 days in the States (I live in Europe) six weeks later and I was fine. And had my first post-op period while I was there, and while I was VERY touchy, shall we say (I threw something at my husband in the motel parking lot, but he really deserved it! LOL), the pain was manageable with ibuprofin, which isn't usually the case. I was tired, but I always over book my trips, so I'm always tired when I go home to visit. I'm with your husband--I'd get the op ASAP and get it over with. If it's a laparoscopy, which I'm assuming, and not a laparotomy, you should be fine. If it's the latter, then wait. That has a much longer recovery period. As for the gas, all my docs have always pumped it out more or less. But it still gets in the neck and hurts, but massage helps. As for nervousness, ask the nice doctor for valium or something. I always do now, and it makes life much nicer. I'm a veteran of 13 surgeries (seven for endo, eight if you count the hernia at the over-incisioned belly button), and I both hate and fear general anaesthesia. But ask for something to help you relax and it will make things easier. Yes, there are risks, but living with pain is no picnic, either. It's always a balancing act. Good luck with whatever you decide, and have a great time in Japan. You're going to love it! Feel free to drop me a line if you want. Margarette
