Hydrocodone, a semisynthetic narcotic pain-reliever and a cough suppressant, similar to codeine, and acetaminophen, a non-narcotic analgesic (like Tylenol pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer) are combined to achieve pain relief, as in Vicodin and Lortab.

Other brand names: Allay; Anexsia; Bancap-HC; Co-Gesic; Dolacet; Dolagesic; Hy-Phen; Hyco-Pap; Hycomed; Hydrocet; Hydrogesic; Lorcet; Margesic; Norco; Polygesic; Stagesic; Vanacet; Zydone

The most frequent side effects include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, and vomiting. Other side effects include drowsiness, constipation, and difficulty in urinating.
