Re: Endo and IBSFrom: Allie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Jan 16 11:48:17 2004
Hi, Teresa... I've been living with my endo diagnosis for four years (I'm 20 now), with the official diagnosis last April when I had my first lap. I have also had an IBS diagnosis for about two years. I just started Synarel today after a long battle with five birth controls that have failed, and my gyno said this may help with my IBS. Since my gastroenterologist told me it was just stress after a colonscopy and upper GI revealed nothing, I haven't been able to do anything about it since the drugs I've had perscribed blur my vision (Bentyl is the one I take when it gets really bad). While I've been reading the risks of Synarel, and they are scary, so is bleeding for 90 days straight! Back to the IBS: my gyno said that with the Synarel since the pain from endo should disipate over the next few months, and I'll know how much of my stomach cramping and diarrheais is from the IBS and if the two are separate probelms or adding to one another. Often endo and IBS are misdiagnosed for one another, and since surgery isn't a thrill, I would check other options before taking any meds: find a good gastroenterologist, have the colonoscopy (I know you don't want to, and it's not a good time, but surgery recovery is worse, even if it's just explotatory), and confirm that it's nothing like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. It's a long process of elimination, and in the end you might have both, but it's better to KNOW so you can start to have a good course of treatment. I'm not sure that endo "causes" IBS, but they seem to go hand in hand. Go to a good doctor or three, and get several opinions! Good luck, Allie
