Hi:

Rebecca, a laparoscopy is also what's referred to as "key hole surgery" - the Dr makes one small incision usually around your belly button, plus as many more small incisions as necessary (usually from 2 to 5 holes total). A laparotomy is a larger incision, done either vertically or horizontally. The laparotomy takes a lot longer to recover from.

A.W., most ovarian cysts can be removed via laparoscopy depending on their size and other factors. A skilled laparoscopic surgeon can remove ovarian cysts up to and larger than 10 c.m.

For a detailed description of what is involved in a laparoscopy, click on the link below. http://www.obgyn.net/displayarticle.asp?page=/women/articles/lap_dah

I hope this helps.
