First off, I'm not a doctor so the following is just my unsubstantiated opinion.

Have you ever stopped your periods entirely due to extreme diet and exercise? I stopped mine once for a year at age 19 with severe dieting, and once again in my mid to late 20s for about half a year with extreme exercise and moderate dieting. My understanding is that at a certain point of weight loss, the body no longer has the fat stores to support making the hormones for menstruation. What you're experiencing sounds a little like what I remember from when I was just about to "lose" my period. (Boy, I wish I had the lifestyle and willpower to do it again! Even though I know it's not good for the bones).
