After 10yrs IBS/Endo finally helpFrom: Tina (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Aug 29 13:59:28 2003
I was diagnosed with IBS 10 yrs ago and endo last year. The IBS was actually endo all along, but the gastros & gyns I went to did not properly diagnose me. I had a lap last year (laser) and found endo adhesions in several areas on my bowel. After the lap, went on Lupron 7 mo. It didn't work as well as it should have. Then husband & doc wanted me to get pregnant assuring me that this would help with endo. Went on Repronex infertility treatment, which caused me to lose 10 pounds and have severe IBS. Luckily did not get pregnant. My gyn, however, did find a gastro that specializes in endo. I went to Dr. Mathias (Houston,TX) weighing only 70 pounds. His theory is that endo is a Pre-Diabetic condition. IBS is often a symptom of endo. He tested me for diabetes, conective tissue disorders, and performed an EGG. He determined that I have nerve damage in my colon due to the endo (rare condition). I am now on a balanced diet, protein, fat (Omega's 3 & 9), and low glycemic index (below 50) carbohydrates. Similar to "The Zone." I take lots of olive oil and flax seed oil and vitamins. I also stay away from caffeine and sugar. In a month there was a drastic improvement in my colon. I do have to take Klonopin for the nerve damage, but the diet has made a world of difference. I've seen a lot of discussion about IBS and endo on the bowel. Thought this may help someone. The research paper that explains the insulin connection to endometriosis is entiled "Relation of endometriosis and neuromuscular disease of the gastrointestinal tract: new insights," by John R. Mathias et al. in Fertility And Sterility, July 1998.
