Having to consider hysterectomy - Physicians' advice appreciatedFrom: Allison (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu Jul 17 01:48:30 2003
Hi everyone, I'm 26 years old, and I have a 10-year history of moderate to severe endometriosis. I've had two laparoscopic surgeries, and I've been on regular medications to control the condition. Unfortunately, it keeps recurring, and I'm experiencing a significant side effect of continuous BCPs--hormonal gingivitis--that my dentist said is a result of the progestin in the pill. Despite careful treatment, he said it may persist as long as I continue to take them. At this point, I'm tired and I'm close to giving up hope. Being able to carry a child may be unlikely due to the condition and the bicornuate shape of my uterus. I've accepted that adoption may be in my future. Additionally, I'm concerned about the adverse effects of taking BCPs on a long-term, continuous basis. Here is my question: If I do opt to have a hysterectomy, would it be safe to use an estradiol patch such as Climara or Vivelle? If so, would it be possible for the dose to be tailored to the normal level of a 26-year-old? I want to protect my femininity as well as my health, and this is very important to me. Any advice, guidance, or feedback would be appreciated.
