I thought I'd attach my original message about the research in case anyone missed it (with the mistakes changed :-)!!!!):

Hi, Let me introduce myself,

My name is Maria Macintyre. I am a research student at the Knowledge Media institute (http://kmi.open.ac.uk) Open University, UK.

I’m looking into the public use of the internet and whether this has any impact on the changing roles of health professionals and the public. As part of my research I’m observing health communities and finding out about the experience of using the internet by talking to community members, like yourselves.

Obgyn.net have agreed to let me observe the forum. However, I wanted to introduce myself and let everyone on the board know about the project.

What’s the research about?

I'm interested in looking at the forum retrospectively for a period of three months (i.e. Dec 02 - Feb 03). This will also involve me looking through the archives (to follow a particular thread, for example) and me sending an occasional message to the forum.

Would you be interested in talking to me?

In addition, I would really like to talk to you personally about your opinions and experiences of using the internet for health purposes and your use of this forum in particular. I'm also interested in whether this has had any impact on your interactions with health professionals. If you would like to share your views with me, we can do this using a chat facility or by telephone if you prefer.

Anonymity and confidentiality

Let me take this opportunity to assure you that anything you say either to me personally or on the forum will be anonymised and treated as private and confidential. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw you consent if you wish to do so.

What’s in it for you?

Although the research is for my PhD, I think that it will be worthwhile for you and your community. It should provide a detailed picture of online health communities; this will be done by looking at the needs of people like yourselves and how these are being met. I'm looking at another online Endometriosis forum as well, which means that I'll be paying particular attention to the specific needs of people with Endo. I intend to publish my findings, which will also raise the profile of online health communities and their usefulness.

It’s a two-way process!!!

I feel that research should be an interactive process between the researcher and the communities studied and would welcome any feedback or comments about the research. Also if you are interested I can give you a summary of the findings.

If you’re happy to talk to me…

Simply email me and let me know. Then we can arrange a time that would be convenient to you.

Whatever you decide

Don't hesitate to email me if you have any further queries.

Look forward to hearing from you soon,

Many Thanks,

--
Maria
