I have had four laparoscopies and 1 laparotomy. The main difference I found was that I was more tired. Everyone including my mother scared me to death with the hurt like hell stuff. I almost left the hospital. It wasn't that bad. Either way you're punching a hole in your stomach. Don't let yourself het worked up. When you have the surgery get up as soon as you can. Walk around straight. I hate the hospital, I got out of bed four hours after surgery. I wanted to go home. Be prepared to take off at least a month. Not so much for the pain, but because you will have no energy. I know you are scared, but whatever you're imagining is worse than the truth. I promise.

I don't have an answer to your question but I have heard that it is hard to become pregnant after this procedure. I am happy to know that you did it. Did you have yours performed view laproscopy? Are you happy you did it? I have not had children and my husband and I are willing to try this procedure as a last ditch effort. Any info you can give me will be helpful. THanks!

Why a laparotomy regardless there is almost never a reason to have a laparatomy a good specialist will be able to do all you have listed via laparscopy so you may want to research this.

To rg: Laparotomies are still performed for a couple of reasons, one being if there is a large cyst(s) involved that are too large to be removed by laparoscopy. An 8cm (3") cyst would qualify.

To Denise: I have had two laparotomies. Be prepared to take off about a month. Take it easy but do try to get up and move around. It hurts like heck (sorry, but it's true) especially to stand up straight but try to anyway. If you give in and walk around bent over the muscles will not heal with the proper flexibility and you will take longer to recover. When you get up from a laying down position, get to the edge of the bed or sofa, roll onto your side, put your feet on the floor (or hang them over the edge) and then push yourself up with your arms to a sitting position. They will probably go over that with you after the surgery. It really helps. I am sure you will discover these things for yourself anyway. For the first week or two keep a soft pillow handy to hold over and put a little pressure on your incision when you sneeze or cough. It doesn't hurt as much when you apply a little pressure there.

Absolutely follow their instructions. They have very good reasons for them even if you don't feel some of them may apply.

Try not to worry or get yourself all worked up over it, that will just make it harder for you to recover in the first couple of days. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe something for a patient to help calm them prior to the surgery. You might want to talk to your doctor about that. I am sure you will be fine and we will all be here for you.

Hi all. I think I'm about to lose my mind. I've had such a bad endo week! My second lap was in November 2002 (seven months ago.) I had adhesions covering my intestines, flattening them, my appendix was stretched over my intestines too. As a result of all those adhesions, I had constant digestive problems and bowel problems. Okay, so, now 7 months after they were excised, the same problems are back. I've been eating all the soluable fiber I can stand to keep food moving though my body...It's not working again, just like before my last lap. I've been practically living on fruit, organic yogurt, etc., and I couldn't go to the bathroom for about a week, and today I went about 6 times. I suddenly got gas so bad that I couldn't leave the bathroom. Then, at one point, the gas started moving through my body, and I felt like I was ripping in half exactly where my adhesions were before, from the middle of my body around the right side of my waist into my side. I've just filled out paperwork today for insurance through my work, because after 6 months of being temporary, they finally hired me. My two laps were in Virginia, and I'm back home in Michigan. Every doc I had before I moved sucked and I didn't get diagnosed until I went to Virginia. I'm scared to go to any doctor here...I don't trust them because of the hell I was put through before. I think I need surgery again. I just got out of debt with the hospital for my last lap...my new insurance will cover only 80% of surgery, just like my last insurance carrier...I'm going to be in debt again!!!! Please offer me some advice...anything...I can't stand my lack of bowel movements anymore. I can't stand ANY of it anymore!!!!!

I am scheduled for my third laparotomy on July 30th. It is definately worse that a laparoscopy, I have had 5 of those. It is important to remember to take it easy after the surgery. Feel free to write if you should have any questions. I think I did too much too soon after my laparotomy last June & this is part of the reason I am having another one. I am also scared.
